Blessings in a Backpack is a national 5013(c) non profit whose mission is to provide food for elementary school children who may otherwise have little or no food to eat on weekends during the school year. The only qualification for this program is that the child must be on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program.
Last year, 25% of our students (187 children) at Davis were on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program, with 155 kids on the free meal program alone. For a lot of these kids, their breakfast and lunch at school is the only hot meal they will have for the day. Which means that food on the weekends can be scarce.
How this program works: The school counselor notifies all the children who are eligible, giving parents the ability to opt out of the program if they wish. Each week during the 38 week school year, a team of volunteers pack food in plastic bags that are then put inside students’ regular backpacks by their teachers at the school week’s end. This method maintains the goal where children cannot be identified. A typical weekend bag would include 2 cans of ravioli or spaghetti with meatballs, raisins, beef jerky, applesauce, peanut butter crackers, oatmeal, cereal bowl and one piece of fruit.
This is a PTA committee and is eligible to receive funding from the PTA budget. For the 2015-2016 school year, we requested $1200 to cover the expense of all the extra single day holidays (e.g. Martin Luther King, Memorial Day, etc.) and the two Thanksgiving holidays.
The rest of the budget comes from private or corporate donations. Our weekend bags cost on average $2.50 each. That is only $100 per kid per school year! To feed 50 kids for the school year, the cost is $5,000. To feed 100 kids, the cost is $10,000.
Thank you all so much for your generous giving and for getting the word out!! This program would not be possible if it wasn’t for you.

** Star Supporters **: I wanted to give a special thank you to a few kids who found out about this program and selflessly gave up their birthday presents in order to make a donation to the Blessings program. Henry Dieringer brought in a lot of delicious and nutritious food that his birthday guests donated at his birthday party! Cameron Terry collected over $200 from her guests and donated it to this program. Another family donated over $100 after asking for donations in lieu of gifts for their 3 year old’s birthday party. Thank you so much for thinking outside of the box and giving back to your community. You all are shining examples to all of us!
If you have any questions about this program or would like to volunteer to pack the bags (we usually pack in the cafeteria right after drop off on Friday mornings), please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
